The Waterberg mountain range is situated in the Limpopo province of South Africa and is one of the more pristine, scenic and wildlife rich areas in South Africa. Positioned on the Eastern side of the Waterberg range the Waterberg Wilderness reserve is only 3 hours from Johannesburg & 2.5 hours from Pretoria and conveniently positioned half way to Botswana. Due to the rugged nature of the reserve which is typical of the Waterberg, a 4×4 vehicle or vehicle with good ground clearance is recommended to access the property. In the wet season a 4×4 vehicle is often essential.
Certain areas of the Waterberg Wilderness Reserve offer spectacular views over the surrounding hills and valleys and exploring the impressive gorges with natural streams and pools is certainly a highlight. The reserve is ideal for the more active with some beautiful walks and mountain biking.

Doorndraai is a not very well known but productive venue for decent Largemouth Bass fishing in a somewhat remote nature reserve not far from the town of Mokopane (Potgietersrus).
Doorndraai is a fairly small dam that can be easily fished from the bank or a boat. It’s a long narrow impoundment with steep banks in places but for the most part it’s not particularly deep.
Bass in the 500 gram to 1 kg range are common and easily caught, (usually), larger fish occasionaly make an appearance.
Fishing pressure is low due to the out of the way location, for Bassers that’s good news. There are 2 resorts at the dam, both with concrete slipways, but take note that when water levels are very low, boats are not allowed to launch for safety reasons.
The dam is in a nature reserve so has abundant bird life, there are also hiking trails and a variety of game to be seen. Take the family, they’ll love you all the more for it.
